Doing your own wedding invitations can certainly save you money, but it will also require an investment of both time and money.

Instead of rushing to find the latest wedding invitation template online and getting excited about making your own invitations, let me ask you something:

  1. Do you have time to tackle your DIY wedding invitations? (between designing, printing, paper selection, trimming, and assembling)
  2. Do you have access to a printer?
  3. How important is the personalized touch of DIY invitations to you?
  4. Would you be willing to partially DIY your wedding paper goods?
  5. What tools will you need to purchase to create your DIY wedding invitations? (paper trimmers, papers, tape runners, envelopes, and so on).

Will DIY wedding invitations actually save you money?

Planning a wedding is a tough task and your time is precious. I remember doing almost everything for my wedding, including the wedding invitations, and I can sum up my experience in one word: overwhelmed. Yes, overwhelmed.

When I created my very first wedding invitation, I did it alone and didn’t realize how demanding it would be. At first, it was fun to choose fonts, layout styles, wording, and papers, but as I got deeper into the process, it became overwhelming. I had to trim everything, assemble it, and buy more materials because I didn’t have enough on the first shopping day. Days later, I realized that I didn’t have enough paper, and the same paper was out of stock. Not to mention, the same lace I wanted to use was no longer on sale. And just when I thought I had made enough invitations, my mother-in-law asked to invite more people, and making these extra invites was beyond o v e r w h e l m i n g.

So, this is one of the most important aspects if you want to DIY your wedding invitations. Time is money and if you’re not familiarized with DIY projects, and this is your first project with paper good, I recommend you to ask for a wedding stationer designer to guide and help you to get the perfect wedding invitation personalized to fit your personality and wedding vibe. We have our DIY wedding invitations collection, and you get everything ready to assemble, or find our wedding invitation made for you, and you receive them ready to send to your guests.

Your first challenge when starting the creative process is to find a template that matches your style and vibe. This part can be a long run as most of the templates aren’t personalized, and you can only change the basic info.

Unless you have tech skills and knowledge of some design software. If you do, you’ll have more freedom, and you can be more creative compared to being locked into pre-made templates online.

Try and experiment a lot. Try different font styles, layouts, and colors.

Remember to highlight the most important info with a font style and combine it with a matching block font style. Only use two fonts and be careful with color printing. Some colors may not appear the same way in print as they do on a computer screen. Try first before printing in bulk.

After you set up your wedding invitation card, rsvp card and details card (optional), now it’s time to think about the embellishment options.

Do not print your cards without knowing which embellishments you’ll need to assemble your wedding invitation, to give the final end look. For example, I have many couples looking for my belly bands only, because they are unique and personalized. They end up frustrated because they already printed their cards and realize that the desired embellishments are not compatible with the printed cards. They want something that is unique to give that special end look and, to be honest, that is hard to get. So, before printing your bulk order, think about how you’ll get all cards together. Here are some suggestions:

  • Vellum with a wax seal or twine and tag.
  • Burlap and tag
  • Cotton lace and wax seal
  • Personalized belly band made with matching paper or vellum

Friend, before I show you the examples of how to save money on your wedding invitations, check our ultimate wedding planning checklist timeline is based on a one-year engagement to help you stay organized, feel in control, and stay one step ahead of last-minute arrangements. Planning ahead for your wedding is essential to keep you calm and ward off sleepless nights during the planning process.

5 ways to save money on your wedding invitations:

  1. Order your wedding invitation 3/5 months prior to the wedding date. The earlier you order them, the better. Ordering a last-minute wedding invitation can cost you more on rush fees and to get the dream wedding invitation.
  2. Buy in bulk and ask for 5/10 extra sets. Most of the online shopping offers bulk discounts for orders of more than 50 sets. Remember to order your thank you cards, menus, place cards, table numbers, and wedding programs in the same order. You’ll save on shipping costs, and you’ll get a bigger discount.
  3. The size matters. You may be tempted to go outside of the box with your wedding invitations, but know that unusual sizes often require additional postage. Stick to a standard 5 x 7 inch invitation if possible.
  4. Watch the weight. Keep an eye on the number of enclosures you include on your wedding invitation, as the total weight and thickness of your envelope will determine the postage. Include a link to your website instead of additional inserts like: accommodations, directions, wedding registry, and wishing well cards.
  5. Save on calligraphy. Instead of getting professional calligraphy, choose a calligraphy font style to print the addresses on your envelopes.
